CH 01 / 04 Science

The chemistry behind the capsule.

Bisglycinate is a chelated form of iron — one ferrous atom protected between two glycine amino-acid molecules. This protects the iron from binding with phytates in food, allowing 2–4× higher absorption and up to ~90% fewer GI side-effects than ferrous sulfate.

Bovell-Benjamin AC et al · AJCN 2000 · Shata A · AJMMS 2014.

Iron alone isn't enough. Copper activates the enzyme that converts ferrous→ferric iron and incorporates it into hemoglobin. Zinc reduces intrauterine growth retardation and supports fetal brain development. Selenium protects red blood cells from oxidative damage and supports healthy maternal blood pressure. The B-complex (folate, B6, B12) drives the actual RBC and DNA synthesis.

Many women have genetic variants (MTHFR, MTRR) that limit conversion of synthetic folic acid and cyanocobalamin into their usable forms. Shiōrra delivers L-methylfolate, methylcobalamin and Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate — the bioactive moieties — so your body can use them directly without conversion.

How to take it, when to start.

Iron deficiency is highly prevalent in every trimester. Clinical guidance suggests starting iron supplementation as early as the 4th month of pregnancy and continuing for 6–12 months postpartum to fully replenish stores.

Abel R et al · Trop Doct 2001.

Most women report a clear lift in energy and reduced fatigue within 1–4 weeks. Hemoglobin shows a steady rise through 6–8 weeks and typically stabilises in the normal pregnancy range (≥12 g/dL) by 3 months. Full correction usually completes by month 4–6.

Bumrungpert A et al · Nutrients 2022;14(3):452.

One vegecap per day — ideally one hour before, or two hours after, a meal with a full glass of water. If you experience any GI upset, take it with or just after a meal. Continue daily for 6–12 months postpartum to fully replenish iron stores.

CH 03 / 04 Safety
